33gal Installed

Finally. All buttoned up and I drove Tigger out of the shop last week.

It may still be sucking air from somewhere - the fuel filter near the carb isn't very "full".

Naturally, I can't win a small victory without a corresponding loss.. the throwout bearing is failing. :(

Cursed 33gal tank

I've been fighting a cold for the past week, plus all of the home-buying stuff going on, and just haven't had time to spin a wrench and wrap up my 33gal tank install.

Sunday I finally spent some time on it, pulling fuel lines and shooting air here and there in an attempt to determine why I'm not getting any fuel..

And finally I started pulling the tank back out, disgusted. This is a chore itself and isn't going very well, either. :D

At first, I found the rubber line I'd affixed to the top rear fitting, which I presumed was the pickup, had been pinched in a V. Relieving the pinch, I could blow air, but it still didn't run.

Now Mark K. has informed me he had similar problems when he first installed the tank in Eyore, and that the top/driver/rear fitting is NOT the pickup, but he couldn't remember which fitting was.

D'oh.

I guess I have some more fighting and struggling ahead of me..

33gal tank swap

After running out of gas on the way home from our last trail ride.. I finally decided it was time to get the 33gal tank I acquired from Mark Korsten at RMIHR '02 installed.

Getting the 19 out was easy.. getting the 33 in wasn't so easy.

The filler spout on the tank hits the frame rail a bit, making it difficult to shoe-horn the tank into place.

The fittings were all in enough of a different spot to make new hoses and such required.

And it just didn't fit in too well.. I raised the back of the Scout a good ways with my floor jack under the tank before it finally popped into place. :D

But it's done now.

While I was at it, I found a few fried wires in the engine bay heading towards the alt. At this point, I want to blame it on the wires chafing on the valve cover and wearing through. I've spliced a new section back in, and I'm hoping it cooperates.

I'll put some wire loom on it once I'm sure I'm done.

392 Update

Not much to update yet.. I managed to disassemble one head and pulled a couple valves, removed the AIR injection stuff, and started porting on some of the exhaust ports last night. I need to get the plugs for the AIR ports before I get too carried away.

Otherwise, not much. I haven't test-assembled the shortblock yet, either.

Homo-wner..

Change is coming.. some of my "wrenching" projects are being postponed due to some bigger events taking place.

Michelle and I had been searching for houses now and then for a while, and pursued the chore with a little more gusto the last few weeks, which wound up with us making an offer on a house last week.. which they countered, we countered, and both parties agreed to.

So, assuming there are no snags, on 4/25 we'll be homeowners.. and busy moving. :D

Michelle took some Pictures of the (then potential) new house on 3/21, posted in the Gallery.

It'll be about a 10 mile drive to work. 1.5 miles of 2-lane to I-15, then 7 or so miles down the Interstate, and then another mile to work.

It's further than I've lived from town, but a lot closer than a lot of the places we were looking at.

More 392 progress

Made some progress on the new 392.

I got a bunch of parts back from the machine shop last week.

My reconditioned and balanced con-rods (after I polished) are now fitted with pistons, and the crank, rods, pistons, flywheel, etc. are all balanced.

For reference, my "Reciprocating Weight" is 1279grams, Rotating Weight 1503grams, Bob Weight 2782 grams.

Piston (hypereutectic teflon coated skirt H996CP60) is 967g

Rings are 70g

Rod (small end) 242g. Big end 689g.

Still need to test-assemble and measure the deck height and then have it decked, plus start in on those heads!

Wheelin' with the new heater, broken axle

Took Tigger fourwheeling twice with the new heater.

Club Photo Albums on March 1st and March 15th.

Heat works great, but the alternator doesn't generate enough juice at idle to run it properly now, so I had to bump the idle up.

I also borrowed a tire-groover and added some tread back to the rear tires.

Groovin'

I also had to replace a broken axle shaft while I was at it - fragged the LF stub shaft on the March 1st run, wasting the spindle in the process.

Everything's still holding together after the 3/15 trail ride, but now I'm anxious to get the 33gal fuel tank installed so I can stop running out of fuel.

It might also be time to try a 4bbl again and see if I can improve the fuel mileage over the reliable-but-not-sized-right 500cfm 2bbl Holley.

I've picked up a Carter and Edelbrock and an extra 4bbl intake so I have the right pile of parts to make it work (I think)..

392 - Polishing Rods

7 of the 8 rods are just waiting for a quick flap-wheeling and they're ready to go to the machine shop. Woo-hoo!

Pictures

I have the hubs for the D60 in hand. Having a hard time getting spring and shackle bushings thus far though. Just about everything else for the 4x4 conversion is here.
