Saturday, 1/18/03, I spent some time finishing up loose ends. Late in the afternoon, I was finally ready to fire up the rebuilt 304C.
No go. Corroded terminals didn't give enough juice to keep the ignition firing.
After some re-wiring and some adjustments to the timing.. it roared back to life, and sprayed coolant all over me.. :D
I did get the motor up to 2000rpm for 20 minutes as part of the re-break in.On Sunday 1/19 I tore the thermostat housing back apart and used Right Stuff on it. No more leaks.
I tightened up the shock mounts, greased things, and cleaned up some.. then fired it back up and backed out into the driveway again.
This time I set the floats, front and rear, and the timing to about 25deg BTDC at something resembling idle.
The tachometer still fails to function, but otherwise things seem to be working.
Took it for a short spin down the alley way.. More than enough grunt to make it stand still on the snow/ice with the Terras and Super Things on it.
I may put on the studded snow tires for Winter Baja in hope of seeing some more traction.
But.. I drove the Scout back into the shop under it's own power, very close to ready-to-race.
I still need to put the front clip back on, clean the K&N (running a paper element right now) and a few other things.
I need to figure out how to attach my new bikini top to the rollbar, too.
Then I'll look at finishing the heater on the Travelette.. to get it ready to head to Cascade for the Baja.
