Subject: Dana 20 vs 300 Transfer Cases

How to tell the difference between the Dana 20 and the Dana 300 transfer cases:

1. The speedo cable attaches on the passenger side of the 300 and on the driver's side on the 20. This is the easiest feature to check.

2. The tower for the shift lever and the output shaft housing on the 300 are aluminum and iron on the 20.

3. The 300 uses 4 bolts to attach to the transmission while the 20 has a fifth bolt on the bottom, I am told.

4. The cover on the bottom of the 300 is almost a flat plate--maybe 1/2" deep, while the 20 oil pan is about 1" deep n it.

5. The 300 came only in the 1980 Scouts, although its possible someone has swapped one to an earlier model.

I haven't looked at them side by side to verify these differences, but I do definitely remember rerouting the speedo cable to the passenger side when I put one in my '78, but that was 15 or 16 years ago.

just the housing where the yokes come out. The case itself is cast steel/iron.
