Original Racer Pics

These are the first available images of my off-road Racer..

The old Racer at the junk yard I acquired it from - ain't much to look at, is it?

I had to leave the old racer at the junk yard.. and take this Camo truck first. They knew I wanted the racer, so they made me take this one before I could get the racer - turns out it was a good move, since this Camo chassis was in MUCH better shape than the old racer.. and it's now becoming my new racer.

The Camo truck had no axles. Front and rear bench seats. No hood, no rad. A heater assembly was in the cab, along with an exhaust manifold or two, a full exhaust, a dash with gauges, doors, one door with glass.. mostly a sound body and not much else!

Unloading the Camo truck - no axles, so it was fun getting it off the flatbed

Finally, the Scout is off!

Sunday - get the racer

I went back on Sunday and brought the racer home.. but it was late, so I had to leave it on the flatbed at Mike's house overnight. Thanks, Loretta, I owe ya for putting up with it for a night. ;)

Bring it home and unload

This scout had a motor and transmission in it.. which made it oh-so-much-more fun to unload.. because it still didn't have axles and tires!

Finally - unloaded!

I took stock. It's a Scout. Steering column & box (no wheel), blown 345V8, blown 727 auto, good Dana 20, one Travelall 3.54 ratio rear axle, set of rear leaves, some old shocks. Rollcage made from Schedule 40 pipe (!! plan is to redo the cage for next summer with steel tubing). Minimal salvageable body panels - except for the tilt one piece front hood/fenders/grille assembly that I'm keeping. Yes, my '72 doesn't have a hood on it - this was right after my V8 swap into the '77. Also notice that I had used a '79 Bronco to tow the Scouts home with (thanks, Mike).

Unrelated to the racer, but on the same roll of film.. I went to Missoula, played a bunch, met these two girls.. put the top down on the Scout, and went for a drive.. "spin the tires again, Tom".. rev, dump, bang thunk-thunk-thunk. You can see the result this procedure (with my new V8!!) had on my rear driveshaft. I also broke my Dana 20's cast iron case. On the brighter side, I had a date the next weekend (after I fixed the Scout so I could drive the 120 miles home)

Just two pictures of my Scout after I fixed the driveshaft and got it home.. ;-)

University of Montana Marching Band practice.. I just happened to be in Missoula that weekend and had Monday off. ;-) My friend Dan plays in the band. He was present during the driveshaft damage incident..

The following pictures are from a trail ride near Ennis, MT. This will be the site for the '99 Divide Ride. It's a beautiful sunset that I did a miserable job of photographing.

On my way home from Missoula around 7am one morning. Taken at the top of MacDonald Pass at the Recreation Area around sunrise.

The "Bar" tires for the racer! Maybe I'll use 'em, maybe not.. they're 32"x18" wide. I believe they were once drag slicks that then had the bars added to 'em.
