Moving the new Racer around front

With the Blue Racer dismantled, it was time to drag the new Camo Racer around front - to where I could reach it with the impact wrench, drills, and welding leads. I bolted the Travelall Dana 44 rear axle under the Scout in a Spring-Over setup, using the stock springs and the stock (too wide and too far apart) spring perches. I made the U-bolt plates out of some 3/16" roll-cage feet I had lying around ('cage feet will soon be made from 12"x12"x1/4" plate instead!)

This picture shows the Travelall axle that was already trussed. You might notice the U-bolt plate is not flush on the springs - the previous owner tried to weld this axle to the springs, and there's still weld on the spring. Note that a poor weld job was done, so the weld didn't actually penetrate the spring steel. Whew. Also, these are stock 235/75R15 tires on stock wheels.

Another shot of the truss. Yes, those are front shackles temporarily installed. I'll be making new shackles from some 1/4" strap before long.. That's also a factory gas tank skid plate.

Side view showing how the tire sticks out and clears (or doesn't)

This is the street behind my backyard. I built a bumper to bolt to the front of the racer with a hitch-head. I towed it around front just like a trailer.

Here's the bumper and short hitch head. You can't turn very sharply, but it gets the job done. I've since added brackets on either end for my full blown tow-bar setup for flat towing Scouts.

A better shot of the tow bar bumper. It's made from two pieces of 40" long 2"x3"x1/4" angle. The top is 3" horizontal and 2" vertical, the bottom is opposite. I welded them together, then welded 12" of 3" channel to the face. I drilled for the stock bumper bolts.

The view of the front of the garage. My 72, the racer, my '77, and in the foreground, Ben's '75 Scout II we're repairing.

Just my trucks..

My '77 - 4" lift and 33s

Just the racer..
